A female reader, Ask oldersister United States + , writes (29 October 2009):

Ask oldersister agony auntHi, I share your same height to weight ratio and I've also been a runner until this year (usually 3 miles a day, 5x per week) and my doctor says I'm very healthy. America is one of the most obese countries so yes, many people may think you are too "skinny" but they are the ones with a warped view of what a healthy size is.

I don't think your weight is an issue, I'd be more concerned about your knees and joints long-term, depending on how much you run. Make sure you are wearing the best tennis shoes (don't bargain shop on those) and maybe start substituting the eliptical or bike for running if you run outside. My father was a runner for over 20yrs (3 miles a day, 6x per week) and started damaging his knees and now uses the eliptical for an hour a day. I started to have similar problems, getting water built up under my knee caps, athletic induced asthma (we have horrible air where I live) so I had to cut back.

Another thing I do to keep my weight stable- I splurged on an industrial size bag of premium whey protien that is really good for muscle building and repair and has plenty of carbs and calories in it as well and I mix that in 3x per day AT LEAST in whatever I drink- I go through a gallon of whole milk with that in it in about 3 days. I put it in everything I can. It's cheaper by the bulk and better for you than drinking 3 Ensure a day. If I don't pay attention to my weight, I'll easily drop down to about 90lbs and have been below that before, which is gross.

I mainly walk briskly now and only for about 30min because it's healthier and impacts your joints and knees less. Running on a treadmill is another option but it's too boring and working out indoors is awful. I don't notice any difference in my tone either from switching to walking and I spend less on groceries because I don't need to eat all the time, which is nice. Take care.

A female reader, rhythmandblues2 United States + , writes (29 October 2009):

rhythmandblues2 agony auntMy entire family, dad, mom, sister, myself were all underweight at your age and we weren't all runners, physically active though. It was just in our genes, as we all aged that reversed and we all have a bit of a struggle keeping our weight down, my sister is a juvenile diabetic, my dad and I are both considered pre-diabetic which makes us both insulin resistant and we have trouble keeping our weight down, must excercise and avoid sugars.

So it often is just in your genes. You do sound very thin and if you run a lot then it would help if you load up on carbs before your run. As long as you are still menstruating, you are probably fine. My sister's body fat was so low at your age that she rarely had periods and that isn't very good for you, so don't purposely try to loose weight or anything.

I wouldn't be concerned about what "guys like" eveyone is different in what they find appealing.

It's great that you are staying healthy and excercising, just make sure you get enough to eat and allow your body time to recoup.

A male reader, Illithid United States + , writes (29 October 2009):

Illithid agony auntClinically, you're underweight, but that whole BMI scale is a lot of rubbish for many people. I haven't seen your build, how wide your shoulders are, what size your breasts are, etc. One 5'6" girl could be anorexic at 110 lbs while another could be perfectly healthy.

Given that you're a runner, I'd venture a guess that you're just lithe. But as long as you're comfortable with your weight, and as long as you understand that you certainly don't need to lose any more weight, you're probably fine.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (29 October 2009):

Honey if you're innately this thin take it and run! But ask yourself do you truly eat right. As long as you can truly say you have proper nutrition, then don't worry about it. Trust the older you get the slower your metabolism will become. So if you truly feel as if you want to gain weight give it time, age will eventually allow you to put on a little weight, nothing drastic though because if you decide to stay athletic for the rest of your life the most you could naturally put on with a slower metabolism is 10-15 lbs. And dare I mention if you decide to have kids! My mom was the same way, your height and weight at your age and now at 56 she only 135lbs and that's after having two kids so just be happy the way you are! And don't worry about whether guys think this is too thin, one thing I have noticed about men, is they are into different body types it just depends on the guy. And trust there is someone out there who will like you at any weight:)

Sugarbuns agony auntYou are pretty skinny, but if you are eating healthy meals and getting enough nutrition I wouldn't worry too much. You're young, you'll gain as you get older, just keep healthy eating habits and you'll never have a weight problem. Enjoy!!!

Candleman agony aunt Medically speaking, you are considered underweight for your bmi. Just a bit though, so I wouldn't get too worried about that especially since you are running. I would worry more about getting the proper nutrients in your diet.

As far as sex appeal, I personally am attracted to skinnier women and no I would not think you are too skinny.

A female reader, satindesire United States +, writes (29 October 2009):

satindesire agony auntIf you think you might be underweight, you should probably talk to a doctor about a diet and exercise plan to help you gain weight. However, at your age I can tell you that gaining weight is very difficult and your best bet would be to wait a few years before trying to change your body before you're done growing up.
