A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Up to the age of 19 i had no confidence. I was embarrassed about everything and i hated the way i looked and my lack of self worth. i was not enjoying my life.

I decided this had to stop and recently i have turned my life around. I really enjoy myself now. I've lost some weight, i'm much more self assured and positive...

...But i have a new problem, i suffer from depression! its comes and goes. i don't know where it has come from, as my life is much much better now!!!!

Why am i getting depression now? and how do i get rid of it?

A male reader, yodastud Canada +, writes (6 July 2009):

Hello,

It's normal to feel "blue" every now and then, even if your life is going well. I think it's not realistic to expect to be "up" all the time - in fact, I'd say that's not healthy either! Life is full of ups and downs, and while you say your life is going well and you're more confident, I think it's hard (perhaps impossible) to get rid of the past completely. Perhaps you shouldn't want to - bc what has happened in your past brought you to where you are today.

To be considered clinically depressed, the symptoms should last for at least 2 weeks continuously. You say it comes and goes - if that's the case, I'd suggest some coping strategies like doing things you enjoy, talking to people you like, etc. If you do feel you are clinically depressed, I strongly suggest talking to your doctor about this.
