Why do men still call the ex, when they have a new gf? It's odd and disrespectful to call the ex on your way to a banquet with your new gf?

Why do men still call the ex GF, even when they have a new girlfriend. I mean staying cordially is ok, but I think it is odd, and disrespectful to call me on your way to a banquet with your new girlfriend. I also think it is disrespectful to call me at all times of the night. Why do men still feel the need to want to let you know what they are doing in their current relationships, and also keep in contact. Shouldn't you just go off with your new girlfriend and forget about me and be happy..... I just don't get it can someone help me understand, I guess a man would best answer this question... Thanks
