 You could ask him how his day went, what did he do etc... Find subjects that interest him and talk about them. Even read a news paper and talk about some of the topics in there.
If you call him regular, try missing out a day so you will have more to talk about the next day.
What subjects interest you? talk about them, talk about how your day has gone, what you did.
