A female reader, anonymous, writes (22 July 2007):

I'm from the UK too so my experience is probably the same as what you will have. When I went, I first had to answer a bunch of questions about my sexual activity. 'How many partners in the last 6 months', 'have I had unprotected sex', even 'have I had unprotected sex in a country where AIDS is a big problem'. The examination followed, which involved me taking off my underwear (I wore a skirt, so I could just pull it up without having to be totally bottomless) and sitting on the table with my bottom right at the edge of it, then laying back. The gynocologist gave me an internal exam with 2 fingers, gloved of course and with lubricant to make it easier. Then he (my gyno was a he, you can specify that you want a female doctor if it will make you more comfortable) did another internal with a contraption I forget the name of. They used to be metal and quite cold when going inside you but most places use plastic ones now. It's a smooth, simple tool designed to slip inside your vagina and hold you open while the gyno takes a swab of your vaginal walls, which isn't really sore; just a small sting, like a little scratch and it's over. The tool insertion isn't really painful either as long as you're relaxed; it will have lubricant on it too. Then you're done. If you're getting an AIDS test done too (you can choose to or not) this is done seperately by drawing blood from your arm. You will more than likely be asked for a urine sample; since you'll need to be relaxed for the internal exam, you might want to ask if you can provide your sample before it. Your results will be mailed to you shortly after, mine took less than a fortnight. Some places give you a personal code and you can call them and provide it to get your results. Best of luck to you.
