A female Australia age 51-59, *anta writes:

Hello Readers.

I have been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder by my Psychiatrist. I am 41 and prior to this was diagnosed with Major Depression with Post traumatic Stress Disorder. My current Psychiatrist feels that CBT group therapy as an outpatient where he works would be helpful. They don't run DBT at the hospital. I like the idea of being with others in a group situation as I feel quite isolated.

My Psychologist doesn't think CBT would help me or being in a group situation.

She also doesn't think I would be accepted for DBT therapy at other hospitals as she feels I am a functioning Borderline and not at the worst end of the scale of someone who cuts themselves a lot and finishes up in the hospital. She feels that at times I go over the border and display borderline traits which I'm not even sure what these traits are to be honest and would like to know.

I go to Uni part time and am a single mum with no support as my daughters father is a drug addict and my sister is as well. I also pay my own mortgage and run my own Ebay business which I created. I don't want to have a relationship with a man as I have been burned very badly by men in the past both physically and verbally. My Psychiatrist thinks a relationship with a male is important for me to have. I miss the sexual part of it, but don't want the relationship part. Had a total gut full to be honest of being with abusive, using men. My Psychologist says not to get involved until I learn how not to get easily manipulated and used by men. Anyway I am wondering if anyone could advise me of their opinions regarding CBT and DBT as I am confused about this. On the one hand I'm being told I'm not bad enough to have DBT therapy and the other that CBT wouldn't be of any benefit. I don't understand why CBT therapy is not supposed to help Borderlines. Can any one help me in regards to the differences in opinions on appropriate therapy and what to do in regards to my desire for sex and physical contact with a man but not wanting the hassles of a relationship. I'm not a slut so would find it difficult to go out and pick a man up. This would also be a dangerous activity.

Honestly, I'd listen to your psychiatrist. Psychiatrists are doctors with years of training and schooling.

Psychologists often the ones that wanted to become psychiatrists but couldn't get in to med school.

dmartin89 agony auntIt doesnt sound like this Psychiatrist has been much help at all.

By the way that you have said things it seems she has enhoyed telling you what is wrong with you and why.

Having a diagnosis doesnt help anything. You most likely do not have BPD, she is just paid to analyse and diagnose so that is what she has done. BPD is one of those things which are invented by clinicians because they want to put a name to every personality type.

I am 21 next week, I cut myself for 6 years and ended up in hospital twice from overdoses.

I am a trainee Hypnotherapist, and from learning how our minds work and what things we let effect them I have completely "cured" my depression, am off antidepressants and have reduced my body wieght by 10% within 3 months.

Talking about your feeling with people doesnt solve anything, this is why people go to see their Psychiatrist for years.

Good luck :-)
