To answer OP as to what I personally like: I like 'anything' my love gives to me, but something she personally made is what I would like the most. A small origami box with hearts inside and a poem is something I received recently. It's on my diary beside my pillow.
One of my exes made a Valentines' 'box' that doubled up as a card. It has a heart shaped soap bar inside, dangling strings with little hearts at their ends, fluffy stuff on the bottom, clear plastic at the front and a flap at the back that reveals "I love you" written in 10 different languages.
Another of my exes created a large deep blue satin pillow with gold Dragon embroidery. This same person got me an udder cup for my birthday. It's basically a small cup, with its 'legs' as the udders of a cow. It probably cost her $5 to $10, but I LOVED it.
I'm not big on jewelry people can buy from the store or movies or games or stuff like that.
Conclusion: be perceptive of what your boyfriend likes, dislikes, enjoys doing/reading/etc and this will give you the ideas you need to get him something he likes.

 Does he own a Xbox, Wii, PS3 or anything similar? if so a game is always good. What about tickets to see his favourite band or team. A red letter adventure, anything that involves helicopters or guns, even better a combination of both. Or if you are short of cash just a mint aero (it really is the thought that counts.)
But that's just my tastes.
