But my question is he used to be a player and would tell the girls he was with he loved them just so he could have sex with them. Well he told me he loves me and I am skeptical if it is true or not. I mean we were a couple and had sex before he told me that but it just drives me crazy thinking he is just used to saying it and not meaning it. how do i know for sure

You judge by their actions, and the way that they treat you. Often it quickly becomes clear if someone is a "player" because no matter what they say, their actions give the game away pretty quickly.
Some times leopards do change their spots - or rather, in the case of guys they grow up, mature, and then meet the right person for them.
If he says he loves you, and acts like he loves you, then the chances are that he does.
On the other hand, if the way he is behaving is giving you reasons to be concerned, then perhaps you should be a little cautious about his motivation.
