 I'd say that you did the right thing. He needed a break, because he found another girl and he wants to see if that works without risking losing you. I wouldn't stand around and be his insurance policy when things don't work out with his new girl because eventually he'll be putting you back in the glove compartment again when he sees another girl he likes.
