A reader, anonymous, writes (20 January 2005):

If your discharge is thick and chunky white it's probably a yeast infection. But you report that it's smelly. That is a sign of BV (Bacterial Vaginosis). Both conditions cause considerable discharge and itching, but only BV smells unpleasant. It may or may not be an STD, but you need to go to your OB-GYN ASAP. They will look at your cells under a microscope and tell you immediately. BV treatment is an antibiotic, Yeast treatment is an anti-fungal cream,or the oral antifungal called DiFlucan. The pill is preferrable but may take longer. The cream intensifies the itch. Once you get a real diagnosis, you should be able to spot it the next time it comes around, which it probably will. Good luck, and hurry to the doctor.

Bev Conolly agony auntHi there,

You need to get to your doctor or a sexual health clinic soon - check the government section of your phone book for a local clinic - because it sounds like a yeast infection, possibly thrush, is the main culprit; however, you may also have pubic lice (the itch). If that's the case, you may have also been exposed to STDs and it's very important for you to be tested.

The treatment for many STDs is quick and painless.

Don't wait; there's no shame in being treated for STDs. The shame is in NOT being treated.
