It has been suggested that now i am of age (doh) I should go for a smear test however i have my concerns regarding being violated by metal objects and clamped open - sounds ouch and very invasive. However much someone says you should get it done it does not make me want to go rush off and do one - thus thought i would ask you guys opinions. Can you come up with a pro and con list for a smear test? Are they really nessessary? Will i die of cancer without one? etc etc etc.

Last year as part of my Health and Social Care A level we had a practise nurse come into our class to explain what happens during a smear test, and she showed us the instruments used. To be honest with you, it may seem scary but everything is plastic and have various sizes which they insert to prevent them hurting you. The brush used was silicone so when they collect the cells its not asif they scrape the cervix. They are trained and deal with this on a day to day basis, so you have nothing to worry about on that front. This test saves lives, and for a little embarrassment it is worth it.

Miamine agony auntThis is a no brainer. The examination is quick and painless, takes less than a minute to do. Many women do die of cervical cancer, something that can be treated effectively if it is caught early. The test only has to be done once every couple of years.

1 minute of embarrassment every couple of years to save your life. If you actually have cervical cancer, then you'll be on your back longer as they try to save your life.

There is no reason not to do the test. If you do get cancer because you refuse to get tested and die, that's a total waste of a life.

Jade Goody, a reality star in the uk died of cancer, leaving 2 young sons behind and a whole pile of fans sobbing and crying. Don't die because your to squeamish to be examined by doctors.

Pro's.. it could safe your life... Con's.. there are none.

Well I'm not going to say they are lovely and pleasant, but neither would I call them painful or violating. You're letting your imagination run away with you. It shouldn't hurt at all, and the metal part is over in about a minute. The metal is smooth and there are no clamps (who on earth are you talking to?). They just gently wind it open a tiny bit so they doctor can take a peek and a quick swab with a long Qtip. It's more emotionally awkward than physically uncomfortable. Women have them all the time and i've yet to hear of anyone being traumatized.

I would recommend finding a good OB/GYN that you feel comfortable with and explaining your fears and nervousness so they can be sensitive and help talk you through it. You will probably walk out thinking gee that was it? That was no big deal.

aphexinfinite agony auntits not actually that sore and the thought is worse that what is it their done by women so you dont feel out of sorts. i was the same mind as you but my family insisted on it as they ddnt want me to die from cancer and such things. so i did it quick almost painless you feel a little weird but other than that theirs nothing to it sure you feel embaressed hell i think they should be the ones getting a medal heeh...you could have many things go wrong with your ovarys and such like if you dont get it checked my friend was found with cystic ovarys to which she needs treatment or she wont be able to have kids. so the pro you get to know your healthy and able to achieve to having kids and know excatly whats going on.. or you take a chance that you may not have kids and could get cancer.. i personally dont want to get another one due to it being embarressing but if it means im gonna be healthy isnt that worth it on its own. good luck with your decisions aphex xx
