 Watch for eye contact. Watch to see if he mirrors your body language. What I mean by that is, if you cross your arms, does he cross his. If you lean against a wall, does he do the same. These are ways to judge some subconscious attraction. If you can see his eyes, if he likes you, his pupils will dialate.
Starting a conversation is a little different. It can be hit or miss. It can also be difficult to sound natural unless you have something in common. Do you know anything about him that you could ask him about. "So, I heard you were in a band. What instrument do you play?" Something like that. Then again, some guys like talking so all it takes is you saying hi. Good luck.
