Should my parents and my bf's parents be in closer contact? Is it normal for it to be like that?

Should my parents and my boyfriend's parents be close?

We've been together for 4 years but we're long distance. Because of this, our families have never been able to meet.

I have a good relationship with his family, he has a good relationship with mine, but for some reason it really bothers me that my parents and his parents are not close, or that they've never even met each other.

Is that unusual? I feel really sad about it. I'd love for our parents to have some kind of relationship. His mom used the computer frequently, but my mom forgets to even check her email for months at a time, so communication seems impossible.

:( Are your parents/your SO's parents close?

A reader, anonymous, writes (12 June 2011):

My daughter started a relationship when she was at University.

I never met his family, they lived across country, though my daughter went to most of their family functions - weddings, birthdays etc. and they were great with her

It would have been good to meet them but it was never suggested and the two have since split up.

I think its up to the pair who are dating to organise it and so I never pushed for meeting his parents.
