My vagina sometimes smells bad; is this normal?

A female United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I have a rather embarassing problem, I sometimes have a fishy smell coming from my vagina. It's not all the time but occasionally my vagina smells kind of like tuna fish.

Is this normal? My boyfriend has not said anything but sometimes I am scared to let him go down on me when I smell this way in case it turns him off.

I don't think there is anything wrong with me as my vagina doesn't smell fishy all the time.

Do any other women out there have this problem?

Gosh, I am tired of these 'fish' stories! We have had an influx of them as of late. People, this posting is well over a year old..so I vote we dig a hole and bury this one.

I feel for you. It must be a very difficult task always ensuring you smell like a champ.

I was with a woman last night who usually smelled tasty. Yet, this time she smelled like rotten fish/eggs. I gagged out loud and just about threw up. It had to be the worst smell I have ever encountered in my life. She did happen to have her usual 'prep' time as she calls it which includes showering but in this case perhaps she had an infection.

My advice as others have recommended is to go see a doctor if your regular cleaning routine doesn't do the trick.

Also, for the love of all things good ladies......for pete sake...smell yourself before you have your man over.

Hi, don't be too worried about the smell it's very common, but it could be a symptom of something called 'bacterial vaginitis'. BV is a build up of bacteria in the vagina. Sometimes you will get a thin, milky discharge accompanied by a 'fishy' odour. Go see your Doctor and get it checked out and he/she will probably prescribe medicine like Flagyl (either pills or cream or both). Good luck with that. As a guy, I don't like the smell personally so I can appreciate it's distressing for you.

dont worry about your fanny smelling like fish most women do anyway. its a feminine thing it proberly will turn men off to go down on you but most men like it smelling fishy when shagging. it turns them on at least it does me .but your fanny will smell worse if you let him cum inside you .if you want your guy to go down on you wash it well before you have sex at least it will tone the smell down for a while or it might not be there when washed .dont wear tights but wear stockings instead and let air get up there tights and tight jeans block any air getting up there and that to makes your fanny smell fishy

It is always a great idea to get checked for STDS when you get your yearly exam, or if you have had unprotected sex with someone you do not know. If you have done that, the great. Now here are some factors that can cause odor, first, thong underwear. The string acts like a wick that allows for bacteria and sweat to travle to your vagina. This can lead to odor and puts you at risk for UTI and yeast infection. Too tight pants are a bad idea too, camel toe is not cute, and your vagina cannot breath, so it sweats and stinks. Do not douch with anything but vinigar and water! Your bacteria down there are helping you, not hurting you. Also, only wash the outer vagina region-the labia and in between, do not go into the canal with soap that irritates the mucous membranes. Okay-now rinse rinse rinse. Turn the shower off and sit down in the tub if you do not have a handheld. Slosh the water around you area and butt to get all soap out, dry really well and put on clean pantys, cotton is always the best. Shaving or trimming helps air you out too. Also wash after sex-semen in there begins to smell rotten. Oh and eat yogart, it helps your friendly bactetria

I too have this problem , but it's not a tuna fish smell.

it's like a weird kind of smell, once the smell came and my boyfriend was eating me out , smelled it and turned him off.

He asked what was that , and i was already embarrassed enough so i told him the smell of cum.

I don't know how to get rid of it ?

Should i ask the doctors?

my g/f has the same problem, she doesn't notice it but recently her vagina has smelled so raunchy I hesitate to have sex with her. She didn't always have a smell this is a new occurance. I'm thinking she may have a vaginal infection. I set up an appointment for her to go see a gyno. this week so hopefully I don't have to suffer much longer.

if the smell is present when your aroused, thats perfectly normal, if the smell comes a couple weeks after your cycle thats normal as well. If you have this smell any other time you may want to seek professional care.

I know how that is it happens to me too but only like once every few weeks and it stays for a day or two..errtime i go to the doctor about it thought they tell me that i am clean. Ive been with the same guy for a 1 1/2 now and errtime we take a shower he just puts anti-bacterial soap into a squirt water bottle then fills it up with water, shakes it up a bit and squirts it in me to clean me out!! Dueshes work as well but they arent good for your body so dont use them too often!!

A female reader, anonymous, writes (10 October 2007):

I was told by a doctor that a big cause of this is washing with anti-bacterial soaps... Especially when your significant other washes with it as well. It is something in the soap that kills natural bacteria fighting "things" thus causing the smell. It is suggested that you stop using the soap and it will go away in a few weeks. If it does not.....could be an infection that needs treatment.

I also have the same problem, it's soooo embaressing, I went to see a friend the other day, I was sitting on her couch watching tv, and she asked me if I could smell something that smelt rotten or dead, I felt the blood rush to my face, i'm sure it was as red as a tomato, I told her I couldn't smell anything, and started planning my escape home.

I live in the country and there is only one doctor here, and I know him really well, so I have organised a trip into the city to see a doctor there, hopefully I can get this fixed asap.

YummyMummy agony auntYou may have thrush or another infection. Go and see your doctor and they can test you. If you don't have an infection you may have to clean down there a little more often then what you are :)

A reader, anonymous, writes (28 June 2007):

You most likely have bacterial vaginosis, usually it is caused because a woman's anus is so near her vagina, wiping front to back when using the toilet helps, and making sure you shower or are very clean down there before having sex (all that thrusting can get that bacteria in there) will help.....you need some medication from your doctor to make it go away, don't feel bad it happens, it is part of a woman's plumbing that we have to deal with at times.

Hi love,

There are products you can buy over the counter in the chemist for personal cleaning, ranging from soaps to washes you can get cleaning wipes and talc, some girls are prone to this and normal soap may make it worse, also have you checked that you havent got an infection sometimes they can go unoticed its worth a visit to the doc just to make sure and pop your mind at rest i hope this helps a little TAKE CARE LOVE MANDY XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

A female reader, anonymous, writes (28 June 2007):

I had this for a few weeks and I thought it would go away, I was reluctant to go to my GP as it was quite embarrassing and you think it's only a smell (no itching, rash etc) so why make a fuss over it! But I did see a female doc as it was bothering me and she just prescribed me some anti-biotics for a week and it cleared up after that, she said it was 'bacterial vaginosis'.

Can even be caused by a change in shower gel products and things like that, as its just a bacterial infection - I would get it checked though if I were you as is can be left but it won't just go away. Be rid of it!
