A female reader, anonymous, writes (28 November 2008):

Dear heartbroken:

13 or even 14-15 is very young for a boy or girl to be dating steadily for a year. Its a time to be getting to know others of your own age and not focussing too seriously on any one. Perhaps his mother realized this and wanted to protect him - and you.

Unfortunately, he is doing the right thing by not texting you or calling - and the wrong thing by contacting you when he's high. Being friends with a boy who gets high is not something you need! What do your parents say about all this?

As for what you do - you do nothing. Nothing that is, except work hard in school and at your studies; enjoy your evenings and weekends doing the things you like with other friends and on your own. Feelings are likely to change quickly, and in a few months you'll most likely wonder what you ever worried about.......
