A male reader, pursuit of happiness United Kingdom +, writes (23 August 2008):

He is dating someone else, but cares about you enough that he wants to remain friends, but does not want to lead you on. Let him have a quiet period for a few months 3-12, with only brief contact. In that time he will either realize how special you are and initiate contact again in an attempt to get you back or he will initiate contact to try and rekindle a platonic friendship.

Either way, you should date other people in the meantime, you can't lose.
