Councelors tend to let you do all the talking, so it may seem like they getting paid to sit on their hands. But the whole point is that our solutions are hidden within our experiences; we need to hear ourselves thinking outloud to realise what's gone wrong. It wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion, though! Suggest he sees another councellor, but point out that he's there to listen and help him sort his mind out, not tell him what to do.
