What! It'll drop off, hair will grow on your palms and all the other usual rubbish. Man if you can't have a gentle tug every now and then! 4/5 times a month, what are you, a priest? I am not being horrid. It's just that something must of put this in your psyche. Who knows when you get a gal and she is on her period and she is considerate she'll probably bash the bishop for you!

A reader, Dave, writes (22 February 2005):

Dude,

It's not like it's a disease.

The people who say things like its dirty and disgusting are kidding themselves. It's all perfectly healthy. Masturbation has been made a taboo subject by Orthodox religions and world leaders but guess what they are the fools. Don't believe the stories like you will go blind, the only way that could happen is if you had over-lubed your hand(s?) and you caught yourself in the eye with your thumb.

4/5 times a month simply tells you that is your natural sexual urge. I would have been more worried for you if it was only 4/5 times a year and believe me that would be a problem!

Even in a relationship, It is helpful. It takes pressure off your partner to have sex.

A reader, Paul, writes (22 February 2005):

Masturbation actually helps reduce the chance of prostate cancer, so if anything it's good for you. There's nothing unclean about masturbation, despite what various religious organisation may say. It's a perfectly healthy part of the sexual life of an adult - even when in a loving relationship, for a lot of people.

...and without being overly graphic, 5 times a month is "hardly at all"... Put your mind at ease, brother.

Devil's Advocate agony auntTo quote Kevin Bloody Wilson:

If you say you don't w@nk you're a liar and a fool if you say that you do.

So the next time you see Prince Charles on TV, remember he's w@nked himself too.

There's some degree of stigma attached to masturbating and many will tell you that you will go blind. It's probably not a really good idea to recant stories of self stimulation to your mates, there's a good chance of some name calling being done, but other than that, happy tugging!

A reader, Rebecca Batchelor +, writes (20 February 2005):

Rebecca Batchelor agony auntIt isn't harmful at all for you to do it fifty times a month! Please don't worry;there is nothing wrong with masturbating. It provides sexual relief and pleasure so do it as much as you want. It certainly isn't harmful to you physically and only emotionally if you worry about it! The only time you ever need to be concerned is if it takes the place of sex when you have a girl-friend in that you prefer to masturbate than make love to her. Honestly, you really have nothing to worry about.

I hope this helps to calm your worries.

A reader, anonymous, writes (20 February 2005):

It is in no way harmful unless it is getting in the way of everyday activities. If you read any sex health advice I assure you it is even considered normal. Most sex therapists advise people that they need to do it. Relax and enjoy!
