Odds are that at least one other class mate has the same question, and would benefit from your having the nerve to ask your question.
Teachers love for students to engage in the lesson plan with pertinent questions.
Since you are so nervous, wait until you can ask a fairly short question easily. Coach yourself through it. The more you do it, the better you will become.
I used to say, "Practice makes perfect" until my son, about 10 years old at the time, corrected me with, "No, Mom. Perfect practice makes perfect."

If you feel strongly about raising your hands in class, then don't do it. You won't be penalize for not raising your hands. If people laugh at you , laugh back at them. They may laugh at you for the first time and they will not laugh again.
We cannot control people's mouth and if they want to say anything about us , just let them do whatever they like.
