A female reader, Stayc63088 United States +, writes (6 February 2010):

Stayc63088 agony auntIt is possible to feel love for someone but simply not be compatible or get along. Now apologizing for you past?? You have nothing to apologize for, it has nothing to do with him. I understand some people have problems dealing with a partner's past but in no way do you ever have to apologize for it. There is nothing you can change, it is done, and if he can't get past it then there is not much else you can do. And I don't think you should ever "deal" with someone you love. That sounds a lot like settling for less than what you want. I believe that when you really love someone they can have things that bother you, but ultimately you love it about that person because it makes them who they are. He is unhappy all the time and putting you down for no reason, that isn't love, sorry. You are both unhappy and in this situation it is nothing you can fix, past is done, that's it. Talk to him about it. Say you can't continue if he is going to keep bringing this up, tell him you love him and want to just let it go and get past it. If he can't then that is your answer, there is nothing more you can do and you move on. Good luck.
