 Find out what he is into in his spare time - hobbies, clubs etc.
Is he on a sports team or in a music group or debating society that is run by your school? If so, find out about that, go along for a meeting etc.
Perhaps organise some sort of social event - bowling night or something and invite some your friends and his group as well. That will be an opportunity to get to know him and also his mates.

 Well, ideally you should try to get him alone just long enough to ask him if he would like to hang out sometime. If he is shy, he will probably be relieved that you did the asking. Just don't ask him in front of his friends because you would be putting him on the spot, his friends would probably tease him and if he is shy, that will really get to him. Good luck!
