 Most sex toys specifically for men are either for masturbation or for anal stimulation. I wouldn't recommend you surprise him with a toy for anal stimulation, some guys are a bit freaked out by it. It's definitely the kind of thing you should suggest and then purchase.
There are some sex toys aimed at couples, like one that is U shaped and one end goes in your vagina and one end is on the outside that supposedly feels good for both. You can also get toys that go around the base of his penis.
Most commonly though, sex toys are for women. You can always get one for you, hand it to him and tell him to use it on you.
