I love him but how do I get him to open up?

I have been with my boyfriend for 6 months now, I truly feel like I do love him. However I am not his first love, nor am I his....He tells me that he loves me and I belive him, but I feel like it is hard for him to open up to me, For example when we have serious talks he always says "Thats why I care about you so much." OR "You mean alot to me" But he can never say "I love you so much", or anything like that. He always substitutes it outside of just responding that he " loves me too".

Why is this? This is not the type of being in love that I remember, is he just afraid of opening up.Its not like Im forcing it on him either because he said it first. Weve had problems cause his ex used to call him a lot and he felt like he needed to hide it from me so I wouldnt get mad, but I wonder does he still have feelings for her? He says not, but its always on my mind because I fell like hes not as in love with me as he should be.....

A female reader, anonymous, writes (11 November 2006):

Oh, come on! Not all lads are the same, and don't you appreciate him telling you that you mean a lot to him? Be a bit more appreciative, it sounds like he's trying; and that he maybe isn't someone who likes to open up a lot. So? Don't try and change him. Relationships take time to develop, it doesn't happen overnight. Real love takes even longer to develop. He might be waiting until he really does fall in love with you before he tells you.

Can you remember your other boyfriends telling you they loved you instantly? If you can they were probably lying (no offence meant) because it takes longer than that for love to develop. Give this poor guy a chance!
