Hello, I would be grateful for any advice on the advice of starting dating a (Japanese) widow. We live in London, England, and she has been living here 20 years. Her husband died 10 years ago. I am in my late 40s, she is about 5 years older.

Many thanks in advance.

A reader, anonymous, writes (16 March 2010):

Be very respectful and polite. She will probably refuse the first few times. But start off with little things. Like give a flower. Buy her some nice tea. Give her a scarf.

Asians, particularly the Japanese, are very serious about gift giving. They will always feel the obligation to repay you back. She'll repay you with a date!
