I keep forgetting to eat...

Question - (14 October 2010) 2 Answers - (Newest, 15 October 2010)
A female United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

Lately i have been so busy at work that I have been forgetting to eat. Its not that I don't have time, I could make time, but food just doesn't occur to me.

And then people remind me and say, what did you have for dinner, and get annoyed when I say, 'dinner, I forgot.'

When I heard some famous celebrity say the same thing a while back, I scorned it and said the same thing as my friends and boyfriend are now saying, 'how can you forget to eat??'

I came home from work this afternoon, went straight to bed for a bit and even now, while i am typing i am saying to myself, send this off then go get some food.

And then someone starts chatting to me online and i listen to another song and then i forget it again.

Why does this happen??

chigirl agony auntAre you not hungry?

I often forget to eat, and then end up starving, which is unpleasant. I can go for long without food. But after a while it starts to hurt real bad. And I found I don't care for it much, so I started eating.

Eating can be a real process. You have to actually schedule time for it! And plan what to eat, which can be very difficult!

How are you sleeping? Do you often stay up all night? Not being able to sleep at night, and not having an appetite, are two clear indications of stress-related or depression-related problems. Get it checked out if thats the case. Go to your doctor and simply tell them you forget to eat, you lack appetite, and you can't sleep at night. They'll take it from there, and there is help.

However, you could sort this out on your own if you got the dicipline. Get it scheduled. Eat when you have to, and end any silly chats. Don't go online in the first place. Like work, you need to finish it up before you get to have your fun.

My best advice, in case you are just like me and don't really care much for food (I do wish there was a pill I could just eat that has all I need and I'd not have to cook or eat...), here's my personal tips. First off, understand that without food or nutrition you will get sick and die. Seriously. There are so many complications if you don't eat right, you get sick a lot, you get sick for longer, you get it harder than anyone else, and you can develop illnesses that you wont ever get rid of. Not to mention the bags you will develop under your eyes. Your hair will go bad. Your nails will go bad. Just forget about it, you need to eat.

Now that you remember the importance of food, pay attention to what you eat and how often. One small every other hour. Do it. A yoghurt, a piece of bread, a snack, whatever. Every two hours. Then at least one warm meal a day, preferably two. And not hamburgers, something with real nutrition. Make sure you get enough protein (meats, fish, egg) and iron (red meats), and add in a few veggies.

Next, plan what you are going to shop. Make a meal plan for your next week, and shop everything you need for that week. Preferably foods that can be frozen down, like meats, fish, chicken filets. Then buy potatoes, they last forever and you can use them for so much. And rice. The keyword here is things that can stay for long in the fridge or freezer or cabinet, without going bad. Nothing ruins the appetite like spoiled food. Besides, if you always keep a storage of foods that at any moment will taste great, you will find it easier to cook something at a whim.

Take a cooking lesson too, if you don't already know how to work the equipment and spices.

My last advice is to keep healthy snacks around. I find yoghurts or cereal practical, but also fruits. Easy and quick, no need for preparation, and great if you need something on the go. Try to get at least one fruit down per day. Juices are allowed as substitutes (we're not being too picky here).

I hope that helped! I've turned food-fanatic lately due to my own bad health and eating habits, and eating better is one of the things that can totally change your life, your mood, and your productivity. Best of luck!

You just haven't got a very big appetite that's all. My boyfriend's the same he forgets all the time I have to remind him to eat!

Like the saying, 'some live to eat, others eat to live'. You obviously eat to live, well.. when you remember.

It's just different for everyone. Some think about food ALL day, some just don't get that hungry and forget.

Well obviously you need to eat. Maybe you should set reminders, etc.
