I have been forgetful with taking my birth control pills... what is plan B?

I've been pretty forgetful lately with taking my birth control pills. I ended up spotting for a few days, which was weird. I took my pills at the right time for a few days, but I missed one day so I doubled up the next. A few hours after doubling up, I had sex. Stupid, I know. Next day, I ended up taking the pill late again. I've always been okay when I forgot a pill or two before, but I feel like this time may be different because it's happened so many times. I'm just getting paranoid now. Should I go for Plan B?

k_c100 agony auntI'm guessing by plan B you mean the morning after pill as we call it here in the UK?

If so, then you have to of had sex in 72 hours or less. If it has been longer than that then it wont work. It is most effective within 24 hours, and then its effectiveness reduces after that point. But as a precaution I think you probably should take it, there are no adverse side effects from taking it so it is probably the best thing for you to do.

Whilst you are with your doctor, I think you need to discuss your options for birth control. Clearly the pill is not working for you, therefore I suggest getting the injection instead. It is once every 3 months at the doctors and covers you for the whole time. You still have a period once a month like you would with the pill, and the injection contains the same hormones as the pill, so nothing will change except the method that it is administered.

I hope this helps and good luck!

If you're so forgetful with taking the pill I think you should go on the implant, as that's in for 3 years, or go and have the injection done which is done once every few months. That way you won't need to remember to use contraception on a daily basis.
