Okay, from personal experience, it may just be best to put yourself out there. The worst that can happen is a two second embarrassment, if he really is a good friend, he won't think nothing more of it then just a simple misinterpretation.
To get over these sort of things you just have to find it within you to be confident, then just subtly hint at it ;)
