A reader, anonymous, writes (6 January 2008):

Indeed, your hymen may have been punctured. I would not worry about it, except that in one sense, you are technically no longer a virgin because the hymen has been at least partially broken. Many young women do this to themselves by masturbating by finger insertion. The bleeding is generally minor, such a little cut on your finger. Really, no big deal in my opinion. It can mean that when you someday have sexual intercourse, which I hope is after you become older, you may experience no bleeding and absolutely no discomfort. There are other things that may break a hymen other than sexual intercourse.

Don't worry.
