A female United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I have a secret shame...body hair. I have olive skin and long dark hair that grows really fast - great on your head.. not so great on your bikini line. I don't know what the best way is to handle this problem. I've tried shaving, hair removal cream and waxing but none of them work and even the waxing grows back within a week. I got really furstrated and took it all off any now I'm left with the stuble-y man's chin effect. I think what I'm asking is can anyone recommend a practical shape for my pubic hair where regrowth isn't so noticeable and good method to remove it?

Thanks x

Oh my god i am in the exact same situation as you and it makes me so frustrated sometimes that it makes me cry. Even when i wax it only stays completely smooth for about 3-4 days and then i start to see that dark shadowy look and it makes me sick. I have not even allowed my boyfriend of a year and a half to see this area because it looks so hideous. I was thinking about getting laser hair removal but I have no idea how to go about it and have heard on numberous occassions that it is not permanent which would seem a waste of time and money going through that for it to go back to its horrible state again. I envy everybody who does not have this situation and truly thought i was alone.

DrPsych agony auntLaser hair removal is probably the most effective method available and it is not too expensive. I had a course of treatment last year and it works best on dark hairs. I will warn you that it hurts though - a bit like minor electrical shocks but once it is over, it is over! You do get some re-growth but not much and it is better than hours of wax, razoring and the like.

try laser hair removal, yes its a bit extreme but its worth it in your situation.Talk to your dermatologist and see what your options are. Laser hair removal last forever, it might just work depending on how dark your skin is. There also is this cream out there called Vaniqa that slows hair growth aswell. And dont forget there are other kinds of hair removal creams out there you should try, what they do is dissolve the hair beneath the suface of your skin, talk to your dermatologist for sure.

A female reader, Miss_Oz United Kingdom +, writes (17 May 2007):

Miss_Oz agony auntErrant body hair is as bad a curse on us girls as our periods, in my opinion. I understand for a darker girl it is worse. Shaving is a simple method but you risk razor burn (that sore red rash that crops up shortly after you shave) which is unsightly and enflamed further by rubbing on your underwear and your legs when you move. Waxing is quick but painful and as you say, doesn't really last long enough to merit the suffering! Hair-removal creams are generally poor. I would suggest shaving with a clean, fresh-bladed razor; soak in the bath for a while to soften your skin too. Sit comfortably and hold the skin that you are shaving taut; shave with the hair direction, not against, to remove as much as possible in a single stroke. Leaving a simple thatch may be best for you; easy to manage and not so tricky to keep trim as a shape. There is a lotion named Tend that you can apply after you shave before bedtime, use of it for about a week shows excellent results. It's a tad pricey but so worth it, I assure you. It dramatically lessens redness, bumps and the general sting you get after shaving. Not having that rash-like appearance will make you a lot more confident about that area. You can buy it from:

I promise it really helps. All you need to remember other than that, is that a little shadow does not make your pubic area unattractive; and no man will think so either. If after a while this proves to still be as much of a bother to you, you can look into electrolysis/laser hair removal, which permanently removes the hair. There is some basic, useful information about it here:

Try not to worry about it so much; spending too much of your time just thinking about managing your bodily hair will distract you from the simple pleasures in life, believe me.

Yuna~ agony auntI understand it's frustrating. If you are determine to have this problem solved, you have to be willing to handle the pain.

There's 2 things I've got in my life that I am very glad that I've tried. First is hair straighten (because my hair is fizzy), the other is eplilator. It works just like tweezer. It's easier and faster than waxing, but it hurts. My hair growing problem got so annoying that I think it overcome the pain. I use it on my arm pit, my face, legs, occasionaly bikini area. It's great. It's electric so all it takes is a few minutes before you take a shower. When the hair grows back again, it's not stuble like a man. I love it.

If you are still having problems, talk to your family doctor. Maybe you have hormone issues. Easiest way to deal with it is birth control pills. It settles the hormone problems too.

Good luck! You're not alone!
