He's fine around others so why does he act depressed around me?

my partner is feeling very depressed. I'm struggling. i dont know if its for real or just for my benefit as he seems to be fine with others. he said it because mainly i argue with him but i know its him that turns on me when i ask certain question. i did finish with him but he kept contacting me. i love him to bits but so unsure if he's playing me.
