I don't get it...what help is he expecting from you? To be there because he's not feelin the girlfriend emotionally, to vent to, or to be there to date when he dumps her? I would take a step back and watch what happens.

The Realist agony auntI would say that he means that he cares about this girl but emotional connection isn't there to be romantic. In other words he has fun hanging out with her but can't see it being any more than that.
