Have any anemic people (you or someone you know) experienced the same symptoms and gotten no where with a doctor?

I understand that you're not doctors (or may not be!) but I'd apprecitate any advice.

A few weeks ago, I started craving ice real bad. I didn't think it could be pregnancy because I had not long finished my period so at first I thought nothing much of it. Then I decided to google "addicted to ice" and the most popular searches were to do with anemia. So then I looked up anemia and found that I had most of the symptoms. Headache, ringing in the ears, paleness (although this only lasted a few days), fatigue, and strange cravings. There is no way I get enough iron in my diet (my own fault, I know). So I made an appointment at the doctors to get it checked before it got any worse.

He checked my ears, eyes, neck and blood pressure. Asked a few questions about family health and said I was fine! But I don't feel fine! He told me to make an appointment with the nurse, which isn't for another two weeks, for a blood test.

So I suppose what I'd like to know is, have any anemic people (you or someone you know) experienced the above and gotten no where with a doctor? And if I am anemic, how long before it gets worse? I honestly can't believe that the doctors aren't taking it more seriously.

Thanks in advance for any help! x

A female reader, anonymous, writes (8 May 2008):

I have folate and iron deficiency anaemia. I have been a pescatarian (eats fish but not meat) for many years but last year my periods became slightly heavier and I believe those factors coupled together caused the anaemia. My anaemia diagnosis came about because I had nearly blacked out in a class. My GP ran the blood tests which confirmed anaemia. I was then referred to a dietician and a gastroenterologist because there is a family history of coeliac disease which can cause anaemia. I didn't have coeliac disease but I am gluten intolerant (less severe). The folate deficiency appears to have rectified itself (although I imagine it was through following a folate-rich diet that made it better), yet despite taking prescribed iron tablets three times a day I still have iron deficiency anaemia! Weird, huh?!!?

My main symptom was extreme fatigue, but I am also very pale. I have certainly never heard of the ringing in the ears and the strange cravings as symptoms and have not experienced these myself or know of any anaemic people that have.

The blood tests will tell you if you have anaemia or not. If you have got anaemia, they may want to look into why you are anaemic like they did with me.

I am not medically qualified, so I would suggest going back to your doctor with your concerns
