Hi,

I have a question regarding fitness.

I see that I have a very bad habit of binge eating sweets and chocolates. The urge to eat junk sky rockets especially if I start exercising. I live alone, and I don't feel motivated to cook at all, and my job timings are unpredictable. So I end up eating outside often.

The result is that I gain weight very rapidly, and take time to lose it, and this cycle alternates very consistently. I'm not being at my best level of fitness and it is beginning to concern me as I grow older. I'm around 30.

I do know where I can improve - avoid junk like chocolates and sweets, cook my own food and have it on time, exercise atleast every other day, travel out often, work hard, take a break every weekend, and so on. I am improving in some aspects. My earlier job nearly killed me as a person but by God's grace I am out of that job and have felt better ever since.

I just wanted to ask if anyone of you faced this and were able to overcome it and if so, how? What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them? What did you have to watch out for? What motivated you to overcome the resistance that depressive thoughts or setbacks threw at you while you were trying?

I find it impossible to find something that motivates me so much that I can conquer all resistances and keep improving. Even if I do find something that lights the spark inside me, it seems to go away quite cruelly or as though fate willed it, and that never helps. I get bogged down a lot. I pick up the pieces and trudge along, but, the intensity lessens each time. And I feel tired.

So, it would be really helpful if you could share your experiences and thoughts of wisdom with me. I am hoping that I can assimilate those and feel their importance and feel at peace, and rise up to do the right things in life.

Thank you,

Regards,

Dear Aunts,

Thank you so much for your suggestions and for sharing your experiences with me. They truly resonated with me and today I ran quite a bit, and realized how out of shape I've become :)

I have also curtailed eating junk from yesterday - and I already feel the difference. Oh TheAlmightyDuck, I will always heed thy advice in this regard.

Anonymous reader, my situation is exactly the same as yours - I come from India (I think you also do??) and I face the same dilemmas that you faced, coupled with a morbid desire for Swiss chocolates. I will try eating light at night and get back to a healthy physical routine. In the past I've been either super healthy and physically active or totally idle. I slipped into the idle phase many months ago but alarmingly this was a very long idle phase, and I finally woke up to my follies.

I will look back at your responses for guidance in the next few months and keep myself on the path of progress towards building a healthy body and mind.

Thank you so much again!

Best Regards,

Hey there, I can relate to your situation. But in my case, my work, the new environment and the availability of foods were the culprit. Imagine, back in my home country, i belong to a big family and food was expensive. Also, work involved a lot of excercises, I have to go up and down 10 storey bldgs and have to walk or run between bldgs, so my body figure was good.

When I traveled overseas to have another better job 20 times much better paying than my last one, I worked only in the office and sat there for 8 hours. Since my salary is higher, I get to eat what I want. Alone or with few friends who can afford to pay for themselves. The food serving is big! I cannot afford to just leave food untouched. Back in my home country, many people are hungry. Third, there's just too many choices of food around I can check, so many cultures to try their food so it was really tempting.

The result?? I used to weigh 114 lbs, then I became 125 lbs..and still growing. LOL everyone said how much weight I have gained and I was not happy. But that was way back in 2009. Well now, I am back to 114 lbs again. I cannot control what is around me but i decided to take action for myself.

What did I do? I just decided to walk to the bus stop instead of calling for a cab every morning on my way to work. I saved money and I had atleast 15 mins of exercise through brisk walking. I walk as much as I can and really enjoy it coz it freshens my mind from work problems. Second, I don't eat at night anymore during work days. I just drink tea or water, sometimes coffee. But I have a cheat day which is saturday to eat anything i want at night. Also, I don't eat as much chocolate or chips as I used to, that's only about twice a month that i binge on these goodies. Third, i eat healthier foods now. I love vegetables so much I can't live without it. Take note, I don't starve myself during day time. I eat how much quantity I want but once i feel full, i just stop. I also don't skip breakfast. I enjoy cooking my own meal and take them to work. (The food in the cafeteria is expensive and it's not great tasting too LOL)

So there you go, I am not losing weight but this is good enough for me. The important thing is I don't gain weight, I just maintain my current weight now.

Find a strategy that will work for you and then just maintain that.

xTheAlmightyDuckx agony auntEven though i am a lot younger than you ive always had problems with weight and a couple of years back i used to be a bit like you are now, i hated my on the bigger side yet i never could find anything that would motivate me enough to make a change and lose weight and if i did it would last a few days at the most.

When i turned 8 years old i rapidly put on a lot of weight and i believe it was a simple case of puppy fat, and as my mum done a good job of saying i was perfect the way i was and i wasn't fat i was completely oblivous to it.

When i went to middle school and i guess i was about 9 or 10 i then started to get picked on because of my weight, i soon became just aware of how big i was and it got me down.

So to make matters worse i decided to eat all the wrong foods i would gorge on cakes, CocaCola, crips and i was a fussy eater so healthy things never appealed to me. I didn't go out either because i had no friends.

When i moved to a different school at the age of 12 i got alot of friends, i then started going out more and doing stuff i would skip meals alot because i was out with friends and i lost weight but i was still pretty chubby.

I then proper wanted to lose weight because i simply wanted to be like everyone else and get a boyfriend, so i decided to starve myself for a couple of weeks at a time just living off little snacks. Sure enough i lost weight but it wasn't the right way as i then continued my eating patterns and would put it straight back on again.

Now a couple of months back i was feeling down about being big and really this time wanted to lose weight as i am now just chubby instead of huge like a i used to be, That was when i watched a video on youtube of a guy who had lost loads and loads of weight and i instantly had my inspiration.

Ive lost some more weight now and am going to continue doing it untill i am the right size for me. It is pretty simple you just have to exercise and eat healty.

Exercise about an hour a day, if you have a car try and walk instead as thats how i lost alot of my weight in the first place, i also find first of all making small changges to your lifestyle really helps, like if you drink coke swap it to diet or cut down your portions of food gradually, limit yourself to maybe one or two treats a day and drink pleanty of water.

Try and find alternative things to replace those little snacks, like if there is a particular fruit you really like see if you can make a low fat (yet reallly nice) desert with it. Get a healty option cook book, and try and stick to fish and chicken if you really like to have things like meat for dinner.

As for the inspiration i find that once you lose a little bit of weight and you see you've lost that little bit and feel youve lost weight aswell that then becomes your inspiration. Think to yourself i can do it i can do it instead of i can't. It might not be much but its enought to get you started hey?
