Had a hunch about the guy who asked me out. Turns out he's engaged! How could he do that?

I met a guy who I was interested in two years ago. We met for business reasons and soon as we looked at each other there was an immediate connection. For several months he emailed me, and had asked to go out. I suspected he was hiding something, and I phoned his house. I found out that he has had a fiancee for several months.

I know I have to forget him, but I can't help but think that he was just trying to use me for sex. How can a person who is engaged pursue another person, email somebody else, and say that he thinks of me all the time while at the same time dicussing marrying somebody else?
