Former teacher "troubled soul"--how can talk to him?

Question - (7 February 2009) 1 Answers - (Newest, 7 February 2009)
A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I had this teacher last year and he was a great teacher, but somehow this year, whenever I see him in the hallways, he just seems really sad. My friend even notices it and says that he's a "troubled soul". I don't know why, but I'm a nice person and seeing someone I know sad makes me upset too even if I don't know them that well. How can I ask him if he's ok without the feeling of awkwardness or how can I cheer him up?

P.S. I also do not want him to get the impression that I like him anymore than a teacher...or in this case, a former teacher.

kitty_3 agony aunti gotcha! i know that when one of my teachers is acting kind of off (an indication that he's dealing with some issues), i always want to go see him some morning and ask him if it's ok. of course, i chickened out... but you can be braver!

i'd just say "hey! are you ok? you seem sad." or something of this sort. he'll appreciate that you care!
