Financial support for single mothers?

Question - (29 April 2009) 3 Answers - (Newest, 29 April 2009)
A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I'm 17, and i've just found out i'm pregnant (I was on the pill, so definately not intentional). I've decided to keep it, and i've made an arrangement with school so I can carry on with my education. I'm a bit stuck with what to do as regards to other things though. I've told my parents, and they've said that they'll support us. However, I know that our income can't be that great at the moment, as my dad is self employed, and business isn't exactly blooming. We're not one of those council estate families before anyone jumps to conclusions, we're a perfectly stable middle class family, living in a nice area. The problem is, I think it would be unfair to accept financial support from them, as it's not their responsibility it's mine and my boyfriends. My boyfriends in full time employment, and he said he'll support the both of us, and that he won't leave me (liable to change, I know, as i'm sure this is going to put a lot of strain on our relationship) so I suppose technically I don't count as a single mother? I just really need some information on the sort of financial support I can claim, because I want to try and give this baby the best life I possibly can. Obviously i'm aware that me and my boyfriend are going to have to give up a lot of things in order to support the baby financially, which we're both prepared to do, but obviously babies are very, very expensive.

EbonyBlossom agony auntI'm not sure what financial benefits would be available for you. The quickest way to find out would be to call your local council. You're really lucky to have such a supportive boyfriend and family. What an accident to happen tough, I'm on the pill now I'm scared lol =s Good luck, let me know when the baby comes =]

Good for you for not burying your head in the sand about the financial aspects of bringing up a baby.

Make an appointment with your nearest JobCentrePlus for a benefits check. They'll assess your situation and tell you what you're entitled to.

If your fella does a runner, the CSA will take him on (if they've got their act together by then).

Best of luck to you and baby when he / she arrives.
