Question - (25 June 2022) 2 Answers - (Newest, 27 June 2022)
A female Nigeria age 18-21, anonymous writes:

I get really sarcastic when i read post and answer where compassion is addressed. I don't get it because am i suppose to be so full of compassion that i neglect my needs though i could relate to some things but the whole compassion doesn't sit well with me i can't see a prostitute who lose her life and feel sorry because she was used for voodoo and anyone could be used.

Maybe i just don't really relate because when my mom travels i don't call her i would rather ask my sister because she calls her alot.

Some people think i am nasty but oh well i don't go out my way to talk to people i haven't seen for years or smile always.

You're only 16, and maybe it's just because you haven't developed a full understanding of certain things that happen to people in life. Sometimes people are so hypersensitive they put-up a shield; so they don't have to feel the pain that compassion brings upon us. If you were older, it could be more questionable of your state of mental-health; but not for a kid your age. As you get older, your mind will develop in a way you can discern, and pick things apart easier; and you can understand more about human suffering. We shut-out and shutdown when we can't handle something far too hurtful for our minds to handle. Maybe in this case, your mind is working to protect you; until you're able to handle things as serious as you've presented as an examples.

Wait a few years, and if you still seem to show no sense of empathy or compassion for others; then you might want to seek therapy to find-out why.

It's easy to quickly presume you suffer from an antisocial-disorder; but that can only be determined under an evaluation by a psychologist or psychiatrist. You're at a very young age; and there are lots of reasons for what you've described in your post. If you've suffered from molestation or abuse; then that partially explains why you feel closed-off to the suffering or misfortune of others. If this is the case, you should tell your mother, or both your parents about it. They may seek some kind of professional counseling or therapy for you. If your family is too poor, or you live in a very remote area; then your school may have a psychologist available on staff for students that you can talk to.
