It seems to have been a really long time since I last wrote in. I don't know how long it's been. This time though, my whole life is totally out of my control. My only way to control it is not to eat, I've lost a stone in 2 weeks, and I'm frequently cold. I'm also light headed and dizzy, and when I eat, at those rare times, everyone tries to make me eat more, but I can't, because I'm so petrified of putting on weight. My question to you is: do I have an eating disorder?

A female reader, anonymous, writes (2 March 2010):

the fact that you can't eat because you are afraid of gaining weight and losing control is 100% proof that you are suffering from an eating disorder. all of the other things you are experiencing--being cold, weight loss, dizziness, etc...is a an effect of it. the fear comes first, the effects come second and the effects will further feed your fear and make you more and more sick in body and mind, until they potentially kill you or otherwise permanently maim you.

i had anorexia for six years, and it's not fun is it? it's really not helping you control anything. it is taking over and not letting you do anything else with your life aside from be sick, craving food, and then being terrorized of food, and slowly dying. please seek help for yourself (counseling/doctor/inpatient help if necessary), as soon as you can.

i know that feeling of terror and anxiety that you describe. with alot of time and help from others and changes in your thinking pattern, you can once again live without having to be afraid of that which keeps you alive (food). i've been without feeling like that for twelve years now. i still have fear once in a while of getting too big, but i've not had that absolute terror and the inability to put food to my mouth when i'm hungry for more than a decade. i was about your age when it was the worst for me.

good luck and take care of yourself.

Yes, you have an eating disorder. Please talk to a trusted relative or doctor. You are causing damage to your body. Please don't do that, you are worth more than that. By controlling your food intake, you are only causing those out of control things in your life to be even more out of control. Please talk to someone in your town who can help. You can come back from this.

I think you do, especially if you are becoming dizzy and certainly if you've lost a stone in two weeks. Well done for coming here and asking for help, it's a good start. I don't mean to scare you when I say this, but I know someone who had an eating disorder and has given herself serious brain damage. There are so many things about not eating that can affect your health, leading upto starvation and even death. I would really urge you to go to the doctor. Gaining weight isn't a problem if you exercise and eat healthily. But you're not eating, and this will lead to serious issues. Well done for asking for advice. Please see a doctor.
