A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

This is more of a health question than a relationship question but hoping someone out there can help.

I've had bad lower back pains for about 4 months, previous to that I would get similar pain on the odd occasion suddenly and it would last afew minutes, then go away, and I would not see it again for several months..

I went to the doctors who referred me to a physiotherapist. The first physio I saw said it was muscular and gave me some small excercises which I felt were doing no good. I could not feel any stretching of the muscles and nothing changed. About a month later I changed to another purely for location reasons who gave me some different exercises to help strengthen the muscles in my bum and hips.

I'm getting much better at the ones in my bum, but the one for the hips I cannot do which I intend to speak to him about.

HOWEVER, since going I am literally now in agony, 100% more than before. That much that I had to go to the doctors again and she said she wanted to sign me off work sick, but since I dont get sick pay and I'm employed on a part time 4 hour contract (all my 30 hours are overtime which I get each week, everyone is on one of these) I demanded an MRI to make sure nothing was there as the phsyio seemed assume I had had medical checks which I haven't. I'm now on a waiting list. The doctor wrote me a note to state no heavy lifting but its limiting my every move!

I just feel like every muscle around my lower back is stuck together. I cannot move, I'm struggling to even bend down. The pain at first was purely when sitting down as it felt like everything was pushing down into the bottom of my bac and bending down but now my legs hurt and I can even feel it when lying down which was the ONLY thing that ever took the pain away. I seriously feel like all my muscles are stuck together and knotted up. Whereas before I couldn't tell it was muscular I definately can now because I'm in constant agony, even with painkillers.

Has anyone got any advice on how to help this? Anyone had back problems? I'm only 25 and I don't want my life being limited. I've also heard stories that phsyio doesn't work and I'm wondering if I've really messed up as its getting worse by the day. Any advice?

SensitiveBloke agony auntI can speak from some experience as I also used to suffer from back pain and sciatica.

You need to visit an osteopath, not a physiotherapist or a chiropractor.

Back pain is often caused by the spine being out of alignment. An osteopath will be able to determine if this is the case, and they will twist it back into alignment for you. (Sounds painful, but it isn't.) Physiotherapists and chiropractors are not trained to make this assessment, so cannot help with this. It normally only takes two visits to the osteopath to fix a bad back.

Exercise is important to aid your recovery too. I used to swim. Swimming is probably the best all-round exercise. It will help your back's alignment and help your muscles too.

I went private, and paid £35 for each half-hour session. Only needed 2 sessions. It was well worth the money and I didn't need to wait for a referral.
