I would believe him. At this point in his life, he doesn't want a girlfriend. Assuming that he is in your age range, it's not unusual for him to be taken up with sports. And, it doesn't mean that things won't change when he's older. My suggestion, don't hang around thinking it's going to happen at any moment. Be friends with him, but quit bringing up the girlfriend stuff. Leave it be. And don't chase him - that will just turn him off.
Oh, and if some other boy asks you out - GO!
