CindyCares agony aunt - You may be just the average teenager... or you might be depressed. Neglecting personal hygiene and appearance is a generally a relevant symptom, if accompanied by changes in mood, sleep pattern, eating habits, etc. No ? everything is fine ?...

-Then , start with clearing out your physical space. That's something you have total control over, so it will give you a sense of empowerment and accomplishment ( beside making your daily life easier ). Straighten up your messy room, one section at a day. Like, today you clear your desk , tomorrow you reorganize your drawers, etc. Do not try to do everything in one day, you'd feel overwhelmed . It's fine doing even a very small part every day, as long as you keep doing it.

- make this the chance to get rid of all the junk, this is a very powerful act symbolically and psychologically. The new you does not hold on to old useless clutter, so dispose mercilessly of old ratty shirts and worn-out sneakers and "just in case " items. Throw away the address book with the numbers of people you were in junior high with, ..if ever you should badly need any of them, there's always Facebook :). You'll find yourself with less belongings and a severely steeamlined wardrobe : GOOD. To start over you need to travel light.

- Don't be too ambitious, you want to make changes but you can't realistically expect to lose weight and start exercising and improve your grades and find a boyfriend and learn to dress nice and read more books and and and and whatever you need to do. Choose 3 things you want to change or improve , and start with reasonable goals , broken down in steps. Say you need to loose 30 pounds. Ok, commit to lose the first FIVE for now, and promise yourself a special reward for when you get there . ( Set aside your weekly allowance or Xmas gift or what not for that, or if you have no cash at all, just delay something you'd do normally ,like listening to your favourite band, until you get to your goal ).

Or if it's about personal care, start with showering every other day the first week. Upgrade it to everyday the second. The third week, introduce plucking your eyebrows, ( just an example ). The fourth, applying nail polish .

Go by installments , in conclusion. The timelines are just indicative, you should not add a new routine until the previous has not become ( sort of ) integrated into your schedule and it's not a huge effort anymore.

- Try meditation, even if it's just 5 minutes a day to begin with. Possibly, very first thing in the morning, before you start your day. It's excellent to calm down an all over the place mind AND to supply you refreshed mental energy . ( Get yourself a book, or check on line to learn how ).

- Finally , do your best but don't be too hard on yourself if you fail at first. This is probably just a phase you are going through, after all you are 16-17 and being messy and disorganized is rather common in your age range. I was too, way back then, and I got much , much better in time.
