 When a girl tells you that she just wants to be friends, it's becouse she just isn't into you. It sounds harsh but it's true. That doesnt mean you cant change that.
Do the whole friend thing, but immediately after your going to need to get involved in something like the football team or an activity of some kind that will add some excitement in your life, the idea is to get her interest but not for the sake of getting back with her. You gotta do it for the sake of becomeing more in life, ... well basically you want to show her that you are someone who is going somewhere in life and chances are when she sees that she just might want to go with you. You know what I am saying? Its likely she feels as though you are like a stagnant pond and a women wants some thing she can go fishing in., if you know what i mean.
