Anti-depressants made me put on a lot of weight and it is really upsetting me!

A male United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I was put on venlafaxine a few years ago for depression and anxiety.

However, it caused me to put on a lot of weight. I was happy with my physical health and appearance for the first time in years but I quickly put on nearly 3 stone. I was on the tablets for 2 years and forced myself off them slowly as I hated everything about them.

I am trying to lose weight and have have lost some but it is really proving difficult. I tried to not let it bother me but it was pointed out over the weekend how shocked people were at the amount of weight i put on and that I had the worst kind of weight gain as it had all gone to my face and made me look even fatter (people had had a few drinks so I guess they weren't expecting it to sound as hurtful as it did...).

I guess my question is how do i get over how I look? I can't help but be effected by what others think of me even though I know it's shallow (I feel I have pretty low self esteem). I wanted to tell them I was on tablets that made me increase in weight but didn't want to let them know I was on anti-depressants so just tried to shrug it off and say that 'yes i put on weight' and shrug it off.

Just remember that the weight gain is only temporary. It is hard but perseverance pays off, just hang in there and keep trying.

Find something you do like about yourself and focus on that. Thinking positively can be difficult but it really helps, especially with depression and low self esteem. Finding a sport/activity you really enjoy makes things easier.

Also I found eating before I went food shopping helped as I bought less, try to be strict about what you buy. If the food isn't there, you can't eat it.

As for those people, they probably didn't realise how sensitive you are to it as they don't know what you've been through. However if you have doubts and think it may have been malicious then get them out of your life, you don't need people like that around and would be better off without them.

Dont take those peoples comments to heart. Alcohol can make idiots of people. They probably woke up the next morning wondering how they got home, smelling of vomit and with their knickers on back to front. So do you REALLY care what they think?!

I have tried it and can recommend a diet club called Slimming World. They are very friendly, fully supportive and have a good diet plan that is easy to follow. There is no counting calories or weighing anything. Their slogan is...Eat yourself thin. It works too. I felt as if i didnt stop eating but i lost a stone in 3 weeks! Give it a try. I think you might find it a lot easier to shed the weight with some friendly support. All the best.

aunt honesty agony auntHow horrible of these people to say this to you, even if they had a few drinks there is still no excuse to be so brutal to anybody. I am however glad you have came of the tablets. That is a good start. It can be hard to keep motivated and to keep to a healthy diet. Have you thought about looking in to a local slimmers club to help guide you and help you through the process? They are there to support you and keep you motivated and active. Join a swimming club, or a sport. Walk everywhere and stick to low fat healthy meals. You will feel back to yourself in no time, also remember to drink loads of water.
