Am I at risk of pregnancy?

A female New Zealand age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Please help me! Very worried and panicked!

I have been on the combined contraceptive pill for 2 weeks, and have been spot on taking them on time, except for one time on the 4th where I was 3 hours late because of being at a friends. However I took it as soon as I remembered. Then on I was fine with taking on time.

Yesterday my boyfriend of many months and I had sex for the first time, but the condom broke. He did ejaculate in me. I'm so worried now because even though I am on the pill, so many people are saying it's a huge risk, I can't help but stress!

I am starting my placebo/sugar pills tonight, will this increase my chances? What should I do?!

Hey Sweetie,

I don't think you'll get pregnant since the chances seem slim, but remember; there is always a chance. Tough luck that it was your first time and this had to happen. I understand you must feel stressed out right now since it was your first time and you encountered this incident.

The best advice I could give you is to discuss this with your boyfriend if the threat of pregnancy is there even if he is there to just comfort you. But you wanted my honest opinion? What just happened to you also happened to me once and now I have 2 year old baby boy. Don't get me wrong, I don't regret it at all and wouldn't give my baby boy up for anything. I was also on the pill but I guess I was part of the 1% group.

Hope this helped! :)

A female reader, leogirl18 Canada +, writes (12 June 2010):

Im not sure what your risk is, but it will most likely be that pregnancy is not an issue in your case. The pill is supposed to be 99% effective with proper use. I was on the pill before, and wasnt very good at taking it properly, but my boyfriend used condoms. Then I was on the Nuva Ring and took it out during sex and then put it back in right after. When using the Nuva Ring, my boyfriend ejaculated inside me all the time and I never got pregnant.

If you are really worried you can take a pregnancy test after it has been about 4 weeks since your last period. Or just make a doctor appointment.
