reader, anonymous, writes (20 January 2010): It's not only the depth of the penetration that makes it hurt. Actually, deep penetration works fine if the angle of entry is correct. In missionary or cowgirl, the guy is entering from the front of the woman and that means that the penis is pointed toward her back. The cervix is in the front wall of the vagina, so the cervix is missed when using those positions. In doggy, it is very easy to enter with the penis pointed toward the woman's front, which makes it easy to hit the cervix. My wife and I struggled with this for a long time before I figured it out. Then I told her to get low, with her head on the mattress or floor and with me going straight in and not trying to enter from a high position. That makes the penis point toward the rear of the vagina and miss the cervix.
If the woman has a tipped uterus, it just makes it worse, as the cervix protrudes a bit further into the vaginal canal than normal. About 30% of women have a tipped uterus. However, doing as I described above allows doggy to work fine even with a tipped uterus.

She's not altogether unusual. It's a deep penetrating position and it can "bash" the cervix which some women (including myself) find painful. It also doesn't stimulate the clitoris for some women to enjoy it completely.
My advice is - go slow and don't thrust too deeply. (not like you might see in porn movies - that's not fun for girls)
Make sure she's well lubricated by giving her an orgasm first in a different position or through oral stimulation. This might also help her muscles to relax an acommodate you better in doggy style.
Don't stay in the position for too long - even with the above advice, she's still likely to experience some discomfort so if you want to come in that position, make sure you're close to it.
If she still doesn't want to, please don't insist. sex should be fun for both people.
