I know this is a silly question but, What does it mean when someone says that they are in a "mature" relationship? Does that mean they have been together a long time, or something else altogether?

Thank you for all you replies. =-)

My girlfriend and I haven't been together that long, and we do not live with each other, but I just wanted to see if we matched other people's definition of what "mature" was, it was an argument we needed to settle. We are a silly couple.

Sorry. Thanks again. =-)

You know the definition of that is different based on the people involved, but I would tend to agree with the first answer....you have to ask if you want clarification from the person or persons who said that.

To me a mature relationship means that they are having sex, they are exclusive, they have mutual respect and they are commited to be exclusive and have an eye to the future..they have some common goals and a plan to spend their lives together.

A female reader, sparkleworks Australia +, writes (30 January 2009):

sparkleworks agony auntIt could mean they've been together a long time, but not necessarily. I'd say it means that they're a) dating exclusively, b) have talked about the future and c) have at least tentative plans to spend it together.
