A female reader, Farris United Kingdom +, writes (20 March 2007):

Farris agony auntThere aren't any specific stages; everyone is different. If you really wish to know what's next, maybe you should keep your own diary or journal... That way you can write down how you're feeling every day after a relationship (Or indeed within one when the time comes), so then you can see if there's any correlation the next time that you might face this kind of emotions.

It's very hard to track though, especially with the wide variety of reasons that you could have broken up with someone for. For example, if your loved one cheated on you, you'd probably feel a lot of resentment and feel that you could never forgive them, whereas if it's a mutual split because things just don't feel the same as they once did, the split would be far more amicable.

There's just too much variety to be able to say "You are going to feel *this* next". Listen to your heart and let these feelings run their course... I know it's hard, but if you keep picking at the open wound then there will always be a scar there. Best to stitch it up and let it heal as much as you possibly can.

Best wishes.
