A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I been with my boyfriend for 5 years, and last week we got married, but he doesn't have papers and I would like to fix his papers, but he came to the United States when he was 4 but according to the lawyer there's a new law that says he will have to make up time in Mexico for 10 years although he wasn't of age to make decissons for himself before he can become a resident. I don't know what to do any more what do you think I should do?

scaredkitty agony auntAsk for a second opinion! I have heard it is going to get harder to fix someone's papers because of arranged/paid marriages. 10 years is too much... he's been living in the U.S. for quite a bit, and he was too young to decide to become an illegal resident, so maybe there can be something done. Keep looking and good luck.

I think you'd have to marry this guy to "fix his papers." That in itself is not a good reason to marry someone.

Either way, you should consider getting a second legal opinion. I live pretty close to the border, where this kind of thing is routinely an issue, and I've never heard of people having to "make up time" in Mexico. What your lawyer may mean is that since he is here illegally he will have to go back and go through the normal immigration process, which COULD indeed take years. Good luck
