My friend gave me a valuable gift, and I need to know if there are strings attached...

A female Canada, *uzzie writes:

If a guy that you are just friends with starts giving you expensive gifts for no reason at all, does it mean that he wants to be more than friends with you?

I'm asking because a guy that I'm just friends with gave me a computer and desk. It wasn't my birthday or any important event in my life and I never even told him I wanted one, he willingly gave it to me.

Does this mean he wants to take our friendship to another level? And do other guys use this as a tactic to get girls to like them?

A reader, anonymous, writes (18 October 2005):

He could want more from you, but he should just come out and tell you that. As for this computer table-you should never feel obligated to give him anything more than a nice warm "thank-you". It was HIS choice to give the gift to you-he accountable for his actions, isn't he. Giving someone a gift should ever be used as a tool to control or manipulate the recipient. Gifts have no strings attached, and no payback should be expected. Hope that helps.
