Is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy just sticking your head in the clouds?

Isn't Cognitive Behaviour Therapy just sticking your head in the clouds cos life is too hard?

Can someone help me with this please.

I would love to think positively all day; recognise my negative thoughts and make them positive. But the first 'negative' thought to arise from this is; if I had to do that daily record of dysfunctional thoughts, I wouldn't have time to do anything else! Seriously, I think a lot and I am sure many of those thoughts aren't good.

Secondly, what about facts...how can you put a positive gleam on them? If there is something seriously wrong with me, if the people I have met are horrible and I seriously am not in a position to meet anyone else, if I am ugly with a few redeeming qualities, the list goes on...how can you make this positive? What if you have exhausted all ways of making your situation better? And this has lead to depression? Life can treat some people really badly; this isn't distributing blame, its just the way life is! It is no one's fault.

CBT is meant to turn the thought around, but what if you have evidence that only backs the negative?

It just seems to me that CBT if human, would be that annoying do gooder that you would want to tell to go away, not because you'd want to dwell on negative thinking, but because their positive slant would be too articfical and not realistic.

What do you think? Please help as I just don't get it and unless I do, how do I help myself?!

Hi

YOU WANT A POSITIVE SLANT ON NEGATIVE REALITY... OK !

Life slaps us in the face, kicks us in the arse, pisses on us from a great height, we hit rock bottom then some twat opens a trap door..... that's life and it makes us or breaks us. It happens to us all...in different ways. It is not only what others do to us that is NEGATIVE OR POSITIVE it is how we REACT and that can become your reality. You have not said what your serious problem is....are you disfigured in some way?

The mind is king not slave! and this is what we all need to turn around to find the realistic solutions to our problems. If something can not be changed then acceptance is a good starting point. If it is how others have treated us then it is our choice whether to grow or shrink. Many argue this with good reason , but put that barrier there and you stay in the same place. Positive thinking can turn life around but you have to BELIEVE IT POSSIBLE to have any result. This does sound unrealistic as such. have you ever felt really well one day and somebody says you look a little off colour, then you THINK oh i must look unwell, then you start to feel unwell etc etc....a negative seed was planted and OUR MIND watered it and it grew then we are in bed with a cold. This works in the opposite way too...here POSITIVE and results are positive. So if OTHER PEOLPE CAN DO THIS TO OUR MINDS, WE MUST BE ABLE TO DO THE SAME TO OUR MINDS.Been Positive isn't about been a do gooder, its about how do we want to feel, look within and open your mind for change ..inside first.

As a person who has participated in CBT, your head in the clouds scenerio with think positive thoughts is oversimplified.

CBT is about changing your behaviors throught understanding why you behave a certian way in the frst palce. Throught these realizations, you can begin to take steps to behave, think and/or act in a healthier way.

CBT is comonly used in conjuction with other therapy, treatments or medicaion, not all by itself.

With a good practitioner, it is very helpful and you can learn a lot of new ways to live healthfully.
